The State of Knowledge of Rabbi Ishmael’s Teachings among the Amoraim of Eretz Yisrael

Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Ishmael as can be seen from the two Mekhiltoth and the Talmudim espoused different systems of halakhic exegesis. Rabbi Akiva’s system or at least the like of it won over Rabbi Ishmael’s among the later Tannaim and the Amoraim of Eretz Yisrael. On some occassions, the Talmud Yerushalmi, after giving the source of a halakha in the exegetical style of Rabbi Akiva will explicitely inquire about Rabbi Ishmael’s source. It is possible that over time the knowledge of Rabbi Ishmael’s exegetical traditions faded as a result requiring the Talmud Yerushalmi to launch a formal inquiry.

In an attempt to determine the state of knowledge of Rabbi Ishmael’s teachings among the Amoraim of Eretz Yisrael, the study will examine each inquiry of this kind
